Iowa straw poll: What exactly DOES it mean anyway…?

If the Ames straw poll in Iowa revealed anything over the weekend, it was the weakness of the Republican field. From the Des Moines Register:

Only 14,302 people voted in the poll, far fewer than the 23,685 who cast ballots in the last big straw poll in 1999.
That’s a sign Republicans are not happy with their choices. At least they aren’t excited enough to brave the summer heat to vote for them.

Mitt Romney spent more than $2 million in Television ads, but still received only 4,516 votes, which means his campaign spent at least $443 in ad money for each vote he received. That doesn’t even take into account the cost of the free T-shirts, air-conditioned tents, buses for supporters, and months worth of salaries for 60 "super-volunteers" to "talk him up."

USA Today did more math. In comparison to Romney’s costs (which actually may top $1,000 per vote when all costs are factored in):

* Third-place finisher Sam Brownback says he spent about $325,000 to win his 2,192 votes. That’s $148.27 for each vote.

* Second-place finisher Mike Huckabee spent about $150,000 and received 2,587 votes. That’s $57.98 per vote.

Even though Republicans tried much harder to turn out people at the Ames straw poll, there were 40% less voters at Ames this year. How hard did they try?

In ‘99 Bush brought in 70 buses and earned 7,418 votes.
In ‘99 the Forbes campaign had 109 buses and received 4,921 votes.

In comparison, Romney had 125 buses shipping people to Ames, and garnered only 4,516 votes while Sam Brownback had 100 buses and garnered only 2,192 votes.

Was It Dirty Money?

One of Mitt Romney’s top fund-raisers has been indicted for a scheme to defraud companies out of $32 million that he allegedly spent on real estate, a yacht and private jet trips for himself and his pets.

Raining On Huckabee’s Parade. . . FEC Investigates

While the Huckabee campaign bought a number of tickets to the straw poll for its supporters, it didn’t arrange for transportation for all of their supporters. Instead, the campaign in Iowa was encouraging people to catch rides on the FairTax buses.

Word is the Federal Election Commission will be looking into the situation in the coming days. Already, the FEC has been investigating the role a homeschooling 501c3 organization played in political activity on behalf of the Huckabee campaign. The FairTax organization, which has been asking all Republican candidates to support its proposal of a national retail sales tax, has not endorsed a candidate, though Huckabee has said he supports the plan.

I knew it. Take the GD money out of campains!

Just goes to show what I said ealier, some damn fool will get a llot of people to wast their money on him.

Dumb idiots giving him all that money! Oh well.

Do you believe Television & Film could do better to advertise and broadcast ethical backgrounds?

Such as race, sexuality, gender and religious beliefs? Do you also think it is worth going in depth in such Television programme’s & films even though it may cause some discomfort to other viewers but yet give a well educated to those who choose to watch it. Please give reasons why?

P.S This is for a report I am writing, I am not asking you to write it for me but I would like to give people’s personal opinions. Thanks!

YES - certainly yes. Media has a social responsibility to educate the masses.
But what about the readers, the society at large, the politicians, the public, the corporate honchos, the bureaucrats - don’t they have responsibility too. Why do we blame the media and put the entire responsibility for reforming the social evils on the media itself - each and every individual will have to play a role - like Each one, Teach One.

The ills of the world, specially the peace, the environment, religeous fundamentalism, rascisim has gone beyond limits and is beyond media to form public opinions. All media can do is - report what you do - doing or not doing is the cmmon man’s responsibility. Don’t shirk your own responsibility and ask the media repair the damage caused by certain vested interests and countries

Vizio Plasma TV Problems (42" - Model VP422) - No Video/Picture?

I just purchased a what I have been told by Wal-Mart is a new 42" Vizio Plasma Television. Upon purchase, I was told by an associate to leave the television standing up-right for at least 10 hours before turning it on. This, he said, would allow the cells to settle back to their original state and reduce the risk of damage to the cells. I waited the 10 hours and turned on the Television only to discover that I had no picture. I do, however, have a tv that emits a loud buzzing or humming sound from the rear of the unit. The sound from the speakers works fine. I get perfect audio from the channel that the TV is left on. I just can’t see any picture. There is no activity from the screen at all. No blue "No Signal" screen, no static — nothing at all to indicate that the screen has power. Vizio is willing to replace the unit, I spoke with the company this morning. However, if there is an easy fix, I’d rather not have to go through the trouble of the exchange process.

GET RID OF THAT THING! Especially since it came from Wal Mart. I had the exact same problem last year when I bought a 32" vizio plasma. Here’s what happened. My boyfriend and I had gotten the TV and took it home to hook it up. He did it the correct way and it was working and everything and then like after 30 or 45 minutes it would just go to that screen where the sound is really annoying and the picture is like black and white. So we took it back the next day and swapped it out for another one. He hooked it up and it had a great picture, sound and everything but after EXACTLY a month we came home to watch TV and it would not turn on! We thought the baby might have messed with it but he didn’t so we took it back and one of the sales associates told us we should get an LCD so we got one that works just fine with a good picture (although not as wet looking as a plasma) and it gets way more channels. The problem I think is the fact that they are new technology that isn’t yet perfected and he also told us that plasmas can’t get too hot otherwise they won’t work because they have run on gas or something like that and that they are no good after like 2 years. So my advice is to take the plasma back and get a Vizio LCD.
